Simon Zapata
Visual artist and photographer based in Bogotá, Colombia. His work explores light, texture, and transitional spaces, reflecting on memory, fragility, and the passage of time. Through projects such as Before Sound, which documents the transformation of an abandoned school into a cultural and musical space, he examines environments in flux and the traces of human presence.
Light plays a central role in Simón’s practice. He works primarily with natural light, long exposures, and cinematic composition to reveal subtle atmospheres and emotional depth. His recent experimentation with lightboxes allows him to transform photographic images into immersive objects, giving material presence to the fleeting and the unseen.
Simón is drawn to spaces and subjects that exist between states, where textures, surfaces, and objects speak of experience and persistence. Photography for him is both a method of understanding the world and a way to reflect on his own experience. His work invites contemplation, suggesting narratives, and giving value to what is often overlooked.
